Abstract
Behavior not fitting to standard game theory is often observed and reported. Via the prisoner's dilemma and costly punishment, we show that reciprocity cannot always explain outcomes involving anti-social punishment. However, intrinsic motivation other than material payoffs can explain those outcomes. To capture the agents' intrinsic motivation we introduce a uniform notion of altruism and sadism, the so-called SEA-model.
