Abstract

This qualitative study explores how older adults in rural Bavaria, Germany, experience food poverty beyond financial constraints, emphasizing its material and social dimensions. Based on interviews with ten individuals aged 65 and older, it identifies age-related challenges, reduced mobility, and social isolation as key factors that limit access to adequate nutrition and food-related social participation. Even in the absence of formal economic disadvantage, individuals face significant barriers. Supportive
social networks can help mitigate these effects. The study calls for a broader, intersectional understanding of food poverty as a form of social inequality and highlights the need for context-sensitive strategies to support aging populations in rural areas.
