Abstract
Most hemipteran insects are associated with endosymbiotic bacteria, which are located in specific gut crypts or special organs, called bacteriomes. During the last years, a lot of new publications about endosymbiotic structures in the subgroups Heteroptera, especially in the superfamilies Pentatomoidea, Coreoidea and Lygaeoidea, and Coleorrhyncha have been published. Amongst others, it could be demonstrated that more than five different systems of bacteriome-associated endosymbiosis exist in lygaeoid (sub)families, which are quite different in matters of localization and structure of the bacteriomes as well as the phylogenetic position of the endosymbionts.
