The introduced sensor measures pO2 by monitoring the Seebeck coefficient of an oxygen ion conductor (here: 8 mol% Y2O3 stabilized zirconia (YSZ)) in equilibrium with the gas phase. The Seebeck coefficient is determined by measuring the thermovoltage as a function of an applied temperature gradient. This sensor concept has two advantages: it is independent of geometry and bears no significant cross sensitivity.
