Very selective hydrocarbon-gas sensors are based on measuring the complex impedance of zeolite functional films. For this purpose, we prepared Pt-loaded ZSM-5 zeolites via ion exchange with [Pt(NH3)4]2+ and subsequent calcination and reduction to metallic Pt particles in the pore system. Many studies on optimisation of preparation conditions were focused on calcination and reduction steps. The aim of the present investigation is to provide data for the kinetics of replacement of Na+ ions with [Pt(NH3)4]2+ in ZSM-5 as a basis for reliable and tailored recipes for the ion exchange. The experimental method consists of adding the zeolite to a surplus of [Pt(NH3)4]Cl2 solution and measuring the decay of the [Pt(NH3)4]2+ concentration until steady-state by UV photometry. Ion-exchange isotherms were obtained by exchange or back-exchange with addition of various amounts of NaCl.
