Abstract in another language

The hydrocarbon (HC) concentration (for example in automotive exhausts) can be measured by a thermoelectric sensor. A thermopile structure on a ceramic substrate enables to measure a temperature difference between a catalyst-coated and an inert area on the sensor surface. The voltage signal correlates linearly with the HC concentration due to the exothermicity on the catalytic activated area. Temperature modulation of the overall sensor temperature enables to characterize the catalyst material or even to distinguish between different HCs as the catalysts’ conversion behavior depends differently on temperature. Modelling of the whole sensing principle by coupling the dominating physical effects allows to simulate the chemical mechanisms in the thin catalytic layer. Now, precise predictions are possible to enhance the sensor performance.
