Abstract in another language

Social transformation in Southern Africa is leading to an increasing degradation of Miombo woodlands. The largest contiguous dry woodland is threatened by similar deforestation processes as many other comparable ecosystems worldwide. The growing land use pressures result in considerable disturbances of its ecological, economic and cultural functions. After an outline of the principle features of the Miombo woodland this article uses three examples to discuss the complex political ecology within the region.
