Abstract in another language

The tribAIn ontology aims to formalize knowledge obtained from tribological experiments, for supporting knowledge access and reuse. Due to the isolated and heterogeneous data sources, knowledge management with semantic technologies provide tremendous opportunities over classical databases. Especially the focus on meaning of data instead of the structure of data is suited for knowledge-intensive domains, like tribology. This meaning is formally and explicitly represented by the tribAIn ontology, which provides concepts and definitions for annotating and linking data gained from different sources, like measurement series as tabular data or results interpretation in natural language. From the perspective of an ontology-based application the tribAIn ontology forms the global scheme for querying and accessing the underlying data sources, which are linked by mapping schemes to the ontology. Compared to data warehousing, this makes semantic approaches much more flexible with respect to updating and extension of knowledge bases.
