In this chapter, we present an approach for the assessment of vegetation dynamics and pasture potentials with field and satellite data. In the first part, we explain how to map vegetation with a combination of fieldwork and remote sensing. We discuss the issues of rugged terrain and background effects that occur when using remote sensing in drylands and mountains. We show how this can be solved by using suitable indices of hyperspectral and multispectral data. Furthermore, we give an introduction to remote sensing time-series analysis to account for the effects of temporal vegetation variations. In the second part, we highlight field and laboratory methods for the estimation of forage biomass and quality. The combination of the presented methods is an ideal solution for assessing the pasture potential and sustainability issues in dry mountains.
