Abstract
Aim: Providing an overview of key concepts related to predator-prey interactions and illustrate them with examples. Main concepts covered: Predation cycle; prey defenses, including inducible defenses, swarming effects, responses against specific vs. multiple predators; predator offenses; predator functional responses; predator-prey interactions in the Anthropocene. Main methods covered: Conceptualizing and modelling predator-prey interactions. Conclusions: Predator-prey interactions can be better understood by discriminating different steps of the predation cycle. Since each predator-prey interaction is unique, modelling such interactions needs flexible solutions that allow to incorporate key aspects of each interaction, for example prey defenses and predator offenses.
