Abstract in another language

Powder aerosol deposition (PAD), also referred to as aerosol deposition method (ADM) or vacuum kinetic spray (VKS), combines several advantages over conventional ceramic coating processes. Due to its unique deposition mechanism (called room temperature impact consolidation, RTIC), film formation occurs completely at room temperature, yet enables to form fully dense ceramic films without any binders nor sintering processes involved. Developments in the past decade pointed towards a better understanding of the deposition mechanism, and a scale-up of the spray process. The latter resulted in an enhanced process control and increased coating areas, however at the cost of a significantly higher complexity of the devices. High investment costs and the difficult prospect to build the required knowhow may hinder researchers in the field of chemistry and material science to start using this otherwise very promising coating technique. In a complementary effort, we present a simpli-fied, more accessible approach to use the powder aerosol deposition. The aim is to enable film formation on smaller scale (spots with a diameter of 1 cm) yet still adequate for material research and application testing. Therefore, we propose and will demonstrate a modular, miniaturized and easily usable coating setup capable of producing ceramic films at room temperature.
