Abstract in another language

The behavior of ZrB2-10 vol SiC ultra-high temperature ceramic matrix composites (UHTCMCs) reinforced with pitch-based carbon fibers (CF) for self-lubricated braking against a carbon fiber reinforced carbon (C/C) disk was investigated, revealing C/C-specific two-regime friction behavior. 0°/90° carbon fiber fabric (ZL) and random short carbon fibers (ZS) were used as two different types of reinforcement. Tribological tests at 1 and 3 MPa (13.5 m/s sliding speed) on an inertia dynamometer were complemented by SEM/EDS of the wear surfaces and thermal-shock quenching up to 1500 °C. Tests revealed a pronounced reversible COF drop, driven by carbon decomposition at ≈ 470 °C from > 0.5 to < 0.2 and back upon cooling. Both pad and disk debris jointly formed the carbonaceous wear film, while ZL pads showed pressure-dependent film breakdown. Pad and disk thickness loss was similar, but disk mass wear was disproportionately high. Both samples showed sufficient thermal shock resistance for braking applications up to 1000 °C with ZL being stable at even higher temperatures.
