Abstract

Significant effort has been devoted to the development of suitable processing methods to fabricate Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO) solid electrolyte films for application in solid-state batteries (SSBs). The primary objective is to reduce the high energy consumption associated with high processing temperatures (> 1000 °C), which are typically required to densify such films using conventional processing methods such as tape casting. Additionally, films in μm range are interesting for the application. The powder aerosol deposition (PAD) process shows promising characteristics since the fabrication of dense μm thick films (> 95 % of theoretical density) is possible at room temperature. Several studies have shown that PAD-LLZO films can reversibly transport lithium ions confirming suitability for the application in SSBs. However, up to now the electrochemical properties of such films with respect to cycling stability (> 1 mA/cm²) and ionic conductivity (> 10^-4 S/cm) do not meet the requirements for a commercial application. In this contribution, we identify the key challenges limiting the electrochemical performance of PAD-LLZO films. The XRD-derived microstructural characteristics are correlated with literature-reported mechanisms that hinder cycling stability and ionic conductivity. Based on these insights, strategies for microstructural optimization, including appropriate thermal post-treatment and additive incorporation, are proposed.
