Abstract

Electrochemical reduction of CO₂ (CO₂RR) offers a promising way for converting greenhouse gases into value-added chemicals. Although copper-based catalysts have the potential to produce C2+ products, achieving high selectivity and activity remains a key challenge. In this study, we present a catalyst architecture based on a copper- silver bi-layered structure. It has been reported in literature that combining Ag and Cu locally separated has beneficial effects, as intermediates (CO) and products (C2H4) are produced sequentially. The proposed design is meant to promote tandem catalysis, in which Ag preferentially generates CO intermediates that can undergo spillover to adjacent Cu sites. Herein we use Ag foam structure generating a high local concentration of CO, which then feeds into the Cu foam structure for a higher CO2/CO fraction, increasing the overall FE for CO, and particularly a reduction of the parasitic hydrogen evolution reaction. In this work we investigate the incorporated Ag seeds, by either DHBT co-deposition or subsequent electroless plating onto pre-formed Cu foams. This enables controlled surface functionalisation using low precursor concentrations of silver nitrate c(AgNO3) = 1-5 mM and short deposition times (t ± 30 s). Incorporating this surface modification into the catalyst synthesis, small Ag-seeds distributed across the Cu scaffold leading to a hierarchical foam structure for good foam structure for good mass transport and improved micro-environment.
