Abstract in another language
The matter at hand concerns transcultural philosophising in so far as children are recognised as having their own cultures. The evolution of philosophical practices with/for children (P4C) as described by UNESCO in its 2007 report, reflect a shared adult-centric tendency dominant in the field of education. This tendency places the child on the receiving end of learning i.e. the adult is the teacher and the child is the pupil. Consequently, contemporary P4C practices appear to place the responsibility of training children to philosophise upon the adults. In my investigation, I have not come across an approach which places the responsibility of philosophising upon the adults. A culture-specific pre-understanding of what it means to philosophise is a probable cause for this tendency. Culture-specific denotes an adult-centric view that necessitates logical reasoning and argumentation as the form of philosophising. As a response, this project investigates the scope of philosophical development for adults when they enter children’s playfully constructed worlds as a guest. In dialogue with John Wall‘s childist perspective, I have dealt with the question empirically through participant observation with child citizens of Trondheim (Norway). These inter-actions opened the space for me to experience a potential form of philosophising with (bei) children whereby philosophy emerged as a playfully constructed, embodied engagement in the question of culture and knowledge.
